Theme editor not loading in Safari
If you clicked Add OptionWise Plugin and Shopify’s theme editor opened to a blank page, a message asking you to enable third-party cookies, or an Allow cookies button that does nothing, you’re almost certainly in Safari.
Safari’s Prevent cross-site tracking setting blocks cookies that the theme editor’s preview needs, so the editor can’t load. This is a Shopify and Safari constraint, not something in your store or in OptionWise, and it affects every app that adds a block to your theme.
You have two ways past it. Either one takes a minute.
Option 1: Use Chrome for the theme editor (recommended)
You only need the theme editor to add the plugin once per theme. Everything else in OptionWise works in Safari.
Open OptionWise in Chrome
In Chrome, sign in to your Shopify admin and open OptionWise from Apps. Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge all work.
Add the plugin from there
If you’re still in setup, click Add OptionWise Plugin again. Otherwise go to Settings → Themes and click Add OptionWise plugin. The theme editor opens with the plugin ready to place.
Place it and save
Drag the OptionWise block so it sits after the variant picker and before the buy buttons, then click Save. See Plugin placement.
Once you’ve saved, you can go back to Safari. OptionWise detects the plugin on your theme no matter which browser you used to add it.
Option 2: Stay in Safari
Turn off Prevent cross-site tracking while you use the theme editor, then turn it back on when you’re done.
On a Mac
Open Safari → Settings (or Preferences on older versions), click Privacy, and uncheck Prevent cross-site tracking.
On an iPhone or iPad
Open Settings → Apps → Safari (on older iOS versions, Settings → Safari), scroll to Privacy & Security, and turn off Prevent Cross-Site Tracking.
Reopen the theme editor
Close the theme editor tab, go back to OptionWise, and click Add OptionWise Plugin again. Reloading the existing tab is usually not enough.
This setting is a privacy protection for every site you visit, not just Shopify. Turn it back on after you’ve saved the plugin to your theme.
Still not loading?
Work through these in order.
- Confirm it’s the browser. Open the theme editor in Chrome. If it loads there, the cause is Safari’s setting above.
- Close every theme editor tab before trying again. A stuck cookie prompt keeps its state until the tab is closed.
- Try a private window in Safari after changing the setting. If it
works there, clear Safari’s website data for
admin.shopify.comandmyshopify.com, then try again in a normal window.
If none of that helps, the editor itself may be having trouble rather than your browser. Contact Shopify support and mention that the theme editor doesn’t load; contact OptionWise support if the editor loads but you can’t find the OptionWise block.
