Assign an option set to products
Every option set has to say which products it applies to. You set this in the Products card at the top of the option set editor. Targeting is required — a set with nothing selected shows a “Choose which products this option set applies to.” error and won’t render on your storefront.
Targeting modes
The Products card lets you mix and match five ways of choosing products:
- All products — the option set applies to every product in your store.
- Specific products — hand-pick individual products.
- Collections — apply to every product in one or more collections.
- Tags — apply to products carrying a given product tag.
- Product types — apply to products of a given product type.
You can combine these — for example, a collection plus a couple of extra individual products. A product matches the set if it matches any of the targeting rules you’ve added.
All products is the simplest choice for store-wide options like gift wrap. For options that only make sense on some products (engraving on jewelry, sizing on apparel), target a collection or product type so the options don’t appear where they don’t belong.
Add targeting
In the Products card, click Search products (or Add more products if you’ve already added some). This opens Shopify’s standard resource picker, where you can search and select products or collections. For tags and product types, type the value to match.
Each selection appears as a row with its name and a thumbnail or icon. Remove a row with the ✕ button next to it. The card header summarizes what’s selected — for example “All products”, or “3 products, 1 collection”.
When you’re happy with the targeting, Save the option set from the Shopify save bar.
How matching works
- A product is matched if it satisfies any targeting rule on the set (the rules are combined with OR, not AND).
- A single product can be matched by more than one option set. When that happens, every matching set’s options render on the product page — see Multiple option sets on one product.
- Changing targeting takes effect when you save (and the set is published) — no theme republish needed.
Multiple option sets on one product
Targeting overlaps on purpose. You don’t have to cram everything into one set — build focused sets and let them combine. A jewelry product might be matched by an Engraving set (targeted at the Jewelry collection) and a store-wide Gift wrap set (targeted at All products); the customer sees both on the product page.
A few things to know about how matched sets combine:
- They stack. Each matched set’s options render one after another in a single list, each set’s options in the order you authored them. There’s no heading or divider between sets — so keep option names clear enough to stand on their own when several sets share a page.
- No de-duplication. If two matched sets both define an option with the same name (say both have a Color), both render — OptionWise won’t merge or hide one. If you don’t want a product to show two of the same option, adjust the targeting so only one set matches it.
- One file upload per page. A product page renders only a single file-upload field. If more than one matched set has a file upload, only the first appears.
Overlap is a feature, but it’s easy to forget a broad All products set is also landing on a product that has its own specific set. If a product shows options you didn’t expect, check which sets target it.
Targeting decides where options can appear, but the set also has to be published and the OptionWise plugin on your theme before customers see anything. See Verify on the storefront.
